Overview

The Shipka Monument stands on the summit of Shipka Peak (1,326 m) in the Balkan Mountains, commemorating one of the most important battles in Bulgarian history. In August 1877, Bulgarian volunteers and Russian soldiers held the pass against Ottoman forces in brutal combat that helped secure Bulgaria's liberation. The monument and the nearby Russian Memorial Church are essential stops for understanding Bulgarian national identity.

Details

The Battle of Shipka Pass

In August 1877, during the Russo-Turkish War, a small force of Bulgarian volunteers and Russian troops defended the Shipka Pass against repeated Ottoman assaults. Outnumbered and running out of ammunition, the defenders famously used rocks, logs, and even the bodies of fallen soldiers as projectiles. The defense held, and the battle became a symbol of Bulgarian courage and the fight for liberation from Ottoman rule.

The Monument

The stone tower (31.5 m tall) was built in 1934 on the summit. Visitors climb 894 steps from the parking area to reach it. Inside, a sarcophagus holds the remains of the battle's defenders. The tower offers panoramic views of the Rose Valley to the south and the Danube Plain to the north. Entry: 3 EUR.

Shipka Memorial Church

At the foot of the pass in the town of Shipka, the gold-domed Russian Memorial Church (Nativity Memorial Temple) was built in 1902 with donations from across Russia. Its 17 bells were cast from bullet casings collected from the battlefield. The church is beautiful and free to enter.

Practical Information

Shipka Pass is located between Kazanlak and Gabrovo on the main road crossing the Balkan Mountains. Combine with a visit to the Thracian Tomb in Kazanlak and the Rose Museum. The 894 steps to the monument take 20-30 minutes. Wear comfortable shoes. There is a small cafe at the parking area. The climb is exposed — bring water and sun protection in summer, warm clothing in other seasons.
