Overview
Pirin National Park covers 27,000 hectares of pristine mountain wilderness in southwestern Bulgaria. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, it protects 118 glacial lakes, ancient Bosnian pine forests, and the 2,914-meter Vihren Peak — the third-highest summit in the Balkans. For hikers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to see wild Bulgaria, Pirin is essential.
Details

Highlights

Vihren Peak (2,914 m): The park's highest summit and Bulgaria's second-highest peak. A challenging but non-technical day hike from Vihren Hut (6-8 hours round trip). The views from the marble summit are extraordinary — on clear days you can see across to Greece.

Baikushev's Pine: One of the oldest trees in the world — a Bosnian pine estimated at over 1,300 years old. Located near Bansko, accessible by a short, easy walk. The tree stands 26 meters tall with a trunk circumference of over 7 meters.

Glacial Lakes: 118 glacial lakes dot the park's higher elevations. The Banderishki Lakes and Valyavishki Lakes are the most accessible for hikers. Crystal-clear water reflecting the surrounding peaks creates stunning photography opportunities.

Flora & Fauna: Over 1,300 plant species, including many Balkan and local endemics. Edelweiss grows at higher altitudes. Wildlife includes brown bears, wolves, chamois, golden eagles, and the rare wallcreeper bird.

Best Trails

Vihren Peak (difficult): 6-8 hours round trip from Vihren Hut. Steep and exposed near the summit. July-September only.

Banderishki Lakes (moderate): 4-5 hours round trip from the road end above Bansko. Beautiful cirque lakes below Vihren.

Baikushev's Pine (easy): 1-2 hours round trip from Bansko. Paved path to the ancient tree.

Koncheto Ridge (advanced): A narrow ridge traverse between Vihren and Kutelo peaks. Exposed scramble. Only for experienced hikers in perfect weather.

Pirin Traverse (multi-day): 5-7 day hut-to-hut route across the entire range. One of the best long-distance hikes in the Balkans.

Mountain Huts

Pirin has a network of mountain huts (hizha) offering basic accommodation and meals. Vihren Hut, Demyanitsa Hut, Bezbog Hut, and Yane Sandanski Hut are the most popular. Book in advance during July-August. Costs: 10-20 EUR per night with basic meals available.

Practical Information

Access Pirin from Bansko (main eastern gateway), Sandanski (southern), or Gotse Delchev (western). Bansko has the best infrastructure with hotels, restaurants, and ski lifts that operate as hiking transport in summer. Bring proper hiking gear — weather changes rapidly at altitude. Start early to avoid afternoon thunderstorms in summer. Carry water and sun protection.
