Overview

Boyana Church is a small medieval church on the outskirts of Sofia that houses some of the most important medieval frescoes in European art. Painted in 1259 — nearly two centuries before the Italian Renaissance — the 89 scenes depict biblical figures with a naturalism and expressiveness that was revolutionary for their time. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979.

Details

The Frescoes

The 1259 frescoes are the church's treasure. Painted over an earlier layer from the 11th-12th century, they depict 89 scenes and 240 human figures with remarkable realism. The faces show individual personality — a radical departure from the stylized Byzantine norm. Art historians consider them among the finest examples of Eastern European medieval art and a precursor to the humanistic approach that would later characterize Renaissance painting.

Notable scenes include the portraits of the church's patrons (Sebastocrator Kaloyan and his wife Desislava) and the 'Last Supper' with its unusually expressive figures.

Visiting

Visits are limited to groups of 8 people for exactly 15 minutes to protect the fragile frescoes. In summer (June-September), booking at least one day in advance is recommended. Buy tickets at the ticket office next to the church or book online. A guide provides context during your visit.
